It was an honor to again compete in two of the CMP National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry with the other 1167 competitors in the President's Match, and with the 1105 competitors in the National Trophy Individual Match. It is always great fun to see old friends and acquaintances again, and to meet new people every year.
Many of us shot in the CMP Games which included the M1 Carbine, M1903 Springfield Bolt rifle, Vintage, and the esteemed M1 Garand Match. Lou entered the Vintage Rifle Match with his 108 year old 1889 Krag (30-40 Krag Caliber), but there was “no-joy” with the match results. After the CMP Games week, Gene competed in the NRA High Power Long Range match. 1,000 yards is a long ways for a bullet to travel.
Unlike previous year’s heat index of 120F and 20 MPH cross winds, we had perfect, no “whine” temperatures, winds, and no rain. In fact, the light wind blowing from Lake Eire made it possible to see far out into the lake, to just off Put-In-Bay and Rattlesnake Island, where in 1813, Commodore Perry won his famous naval battle (and thus the namesake of Camp Perry).
The CMP North Store was full of M1 Garand’s and Carbine’s; it was a beautiful sight to see so many M1’s all together. After close inspection several M1’s were picked out and taken home, along with several cases of Greek .30-06.
Plans for 2009 are already in the works.

CMP North Store update!!!
The CMP North Store at Camp Perry officially re-opened on 12 March. A line with anxious customers formed outside in the 30 degree Ohio March weather. The North Store closed at the end of January for remodeling to give the store a “new look” which increased the size of the rifle selection area, improved physical security and the customer shopping experience.
WELL - we saw the New North store - and the new North Store is short several M1's. I think the group broguht back 13 rifles from the cage.
Here are some memorible shots from 2008.
Bill and Jim after the Hearst Doubles.
How many rifles did they buy out there? It almost looks like a fishing trip, not the dang National Matches!
