Dennis Smith Tribute Page

On October 11, 2008 at 8:04am, the Nebraska High Power Rifle shooting community lost one of the greatest shooters it has known.  Dennis Smith was involved in a fatal car accident on his way to the October match; he died from those injuries he received from that accident.

After living through this difficult week, we all learned that not only was Dennis a great shooter, but a great dad, a great husband, and a great friend.  Dennis impacted so many lives and made the world a much better place.  His smile and cheerful comments always seemed to make a difference.

We all miss you and know that you are looking down upon us, hoping to see us shot an X or 10.  Thanks Dennis.  TTFN

Drunken driver gets prison in fatality

A 20-year-old Gretna man was sentenced to prison Friday for causing a Papillion man's death while driving drunk.

Sarpy County District Judge Max Kelch sentenced Erik D. Hughes to no less than nine years and no more than 15 years in prison. He received credit for six days already served. Under state sentencing guidelines, Hughes will have to serve at least 4½ years before he is eligible for parole.

His license also was revoked for 15 years.

Hughes pleaded no contest in March to motor vehicle homicide while driving drunk, a felony. He had faced up to 20 years in prison. A separate driving under the influence charge was dismissed.

Dennis Smith, 55, of Papillion died Oct. 15 at Creighton University Medical Center. He had been on life support since a two-vehicle crash Oct. 11 south of Springfield.

Smith was driving south on Nebraska Highway 50 in a small pickup about 8 a.m. Authorities say a northbound Ford driven by Hughes crossed in front of Smith in an attempt to turn left onto Nebraska Highway 31.
